“What happens if the boss could destroy the game buttons? That’s a cool idea— Wait, Undertale did that already?”
Games are numbers and mechanics dramas and fantasies.
Players want to deal more damage be the hero.
My job is to balance mechanics and numbers deliver a meaningful experience.
As a systems designer, I work to engross the player into the game world and characters by way of numbers and mechanics. I work closely with players to implement solutions that solve frustrations while also fostering player engagement.
Since I started studying in DigiPen Institute of Technology, I have been amazed and humbled by the effort and grit required in the game development process. I appreciate the design work that goes into games I play much more now that I have peeked behind the curtain.
Now, I am more critical of games and design decisions, especially with regard to my own work. “Bad design implies the possibility of good design.” Every suboptimal decision I notice is a learning opportunity for me to grow as a designer, allowing me to craft players a better experience.
